It has been
noted that America’s greatest contribution to world civilization is the
independent judiciary. The rule of law is pre-eminent.
Sheriff Joe
Arpaio of Maricopa County, Arizona disobeyed a U. S. Court that had ordered him
(Arpaio) to cease and desist in certain practices that were unfair and racially
discriminatory.
The judge
that had made the determination of discrimination and issued the order then
found Arpaio guilty and in contempt of court.
Pres. Trump
is considering pardoning Arpaio, a political supporter, for no valid reason.
The pardon will have the effect of undermining the authority of all federal
courts. The independent judiciary will be compromised by politics.
This action
would amount to an attack on the independent judiciary, and would serve as one
count of ‘high Crimes and Misdemeanors’, the standard for impeachment under the
Constitution. One more equally serious offense and the impeachment process must
begin.
